ETIAS and the 90/180 rule: what actually changes
ETIAS is a new pre-travel authorisation for visa-free visitors to Europe. A common worry is that it changes how long you can stay. It does not — ETIAS controls whether you can enter; the 90/180 rule controls how long you can stay.
What ETIAS is
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is an online authorisation that eligible visa-free travellers must obtain before arriving in the Schengen Area. It is linked to your passport and valid for multiple trips over several years.
Why it does not change 90/180
ETIAS is an entry requirement, like an electronic pre-clearance. The stay limit — 90 days in any rolling 180 — is unchanged. Having ETIAS does not grant extra days; you still track your presence the same way.
What you still need to do
Obtain ETIAS when required, and keep counting your 90/180 days as before. The two work together: ETIAS lets you in, and staying within 90/180 keeps you compliant while you are there.
Frequently asked questions
Does ETIAS give me more than 90 days?
No. ETIAS does not extend the stay limit. You may still stay at most 90 days in any 180-day period.
Is ETIAS a visa?
No. It is a travel authorisation for people who are already visa-exempt, not a visa.
Do I need both ETIAS and to track 90/180?
Yes. ETIAS authorises entry; the 90/180 rule still limits your length of stay, so you should track your days.
